“This installment of Andy Jarvis' excellent First Person CD-R series features collaborations with another excellent UK-based artist, Ben Reynolds. These three tracks do a fine job of exploring the realm of solo steel-string acoustic guitar. In the spirit of Fahey and other Takoma artists, Jarvis and Reynolds do a marvelous job playing off each other. On the opener, "Princess Metal Mountain," soft drones flow underneath the dual picking, give a sense of tranquility and peace. This is a solemn track with an underlying mysticism. It's like you're being followed by a mythic creature, but every time you turn around it scurries out of site. "Bronze Tower (That Holds Up the Sky)" is short but oh so sweet. This follows two high school lovers through golden fields at dusk one summer evening. The smell of grass is in the air, and they are guided by nothing more than young love. There's an endearing quality to this piece that is hard to pin down, but present throughout. It's quite beautiful. The third, and final, piece is the epic "The Immortal Yip." Meandering through clouds of dust, Reynolds and Jarvis seem to be constantly searching each other out. There's a sense that they are just barely out of reach to each other, but that adds to the overall dynamics of the track. In all, it thrives in its length (it's over 11 minutes) and leaves you wanting more”.- Brad Rose

"The short press text for these new Tibprod releases rave about the 'typical Carl Kruger-style', but since I never heard the mans music, I can't say wether that is false or true. On 'Sound Takes' he presents a couple of pieces that were previously released on various websites. Kruger shows an interest in technoid rhythms and the world of digital cut-ups. Cut and paste instruments, no doubt lifted from obscure sources on the internet, with some dance rhythm in the background. I don't think I describe it very well, but the result is not bad at all. Not startling new either, but nevertheless quite nice." - Vital Weekly

a collection of pieces which are more layered and textured than the normal guitar work from Joe+N. still mostly guitar generated, but with more effects and even some vocals to boot. from the label.... "By day Joe Tunis runs Carbon Records, a project that began in 1994 as a means to release his own Joe+4=Poopie cassette. Located in Rochester, New York the label has since gone on to birth releases by such esteemed acts as Dead Machines, Cock ESP, Reynols, Blood Stereo, Tom Carter, Ming, Bjerga/Iversen, Emil Beaulieau and Yellow Swans among countless others. Carbon releases come on a variety of formats (clear 7” singles, triple CD’s, DVD’s etc) and usually come wrapped in meticulously rendered artwork or some form of tactile outer packaging, each aural/visual missive being a testament to ingenuity and good old fashioned hard work. In amongst this Mr Tunis also finds the time to release music under the name Joe+N and has built up an exhaustive and prolific back catalogue on Carbon and various other like-minded labels. For his FirstPerson disc we are treated to 5 untitled tracks of stream of consciousness vox and downer guitar scrabble. Those familiar with the work of Joincey, particularly in his Wagstaff/Coits mould of the early to mid 90’s, will recognise subtle comparisons specifically in approach and attitude that being music which burns bright with the white heat of creativity “in-the-moment”. The “message” and actual “doing” of the work overriding any technical aspects or peripheral logistics connected with recording “quality” or concessions to “correctness”. This is music borne of passion and a need to document that which lies incommunicable in the language of the everyday. "

"Men Scryfa is Chris Naughton and Simon Lucas of Atavist. Atavist is a good starting point to envision the sound for this project, but they take the sound in different directions than the band that brought them together. "This second release consists of one long piece, which was composed for the 1st Symposium for Acoustic Ecology, which took place at Corfu in December 2007. Unprocessed recordings from several fields narrate a sonic story about the dominance of artificial sounds to natural ones. (sample)
thanks to eri for the foto and foto development.
The gradual masking of physical sounds by ongoing noise, as a result of the civilization of machines and contemporary societies, is the starting point for the idea and structure of this piece. The piece devotes its first half to physical sounds from several sound environments. In the second part machine sounds appear, setting up a discourse with the physical ones. The human activity is the key for the transition between these two different worlds (the epitaph band works like a lament for a smothered nature). The sound mixing was realized in such a way as to demonstrate the continuous existence and intrusion of artificial sounds into the natural soundscape. The used sounds were recorded at Kayiafas beach (one year before its destruction by fire), at the area of Kipriadou of Patissia, at the city of Corfu, and at Axaravi of Corfu by friends and me."

microsonic transmissions from a small insect walking across a large plant, or a small being wandering across a large planet or a distant factory churning out goods. this release entices you to listen more and more closely to the sounds its exposing. [3" cdr in various mini cases/sleeves with full color insert, spray-painting, etc]
Reviews (2):
Modisti
Liminal exploration of non-action, the by-products of electric rhythms, glitch noise and various interference noise resulting in a wholly horizontal attitude to listening where the microscopic is celebrated through acceptance and an unquestioning attitude towards the accidental.
Foxy Digitalis
First, a drone of static is faintly heard in the background. Then, layers of hisses and buzzes are sparingly added one after the other while a skeletal, chopped-up electronic beat barely detaches itself from this discreet mass of sound.
And suddenly, there’s that annoying sound that cell phones make when an incoming call passes through the speakers... Yet, each time that noise resurfaces, it is carefully controlled like some sort of guitar feedback – the sound of modern life being transfigured, acting as much as a sound generator as a possible commentary on our most current means of (mis)communication.
By the 6th minute, some distant/ muffled female vocals can be heard (via the cell phone), announcing the changes to come. From that moment onwards, a saturated motif gradually appears and becomes amplified to the point where it fills the entire acoustic space. As the skeletal beat re-enters the picture, the overall sound gets more and more intense and one feels compelled to give in to this surge of ecstatic ethereal noise.
Towards the end of its course, this mini-industrial symphony decides to take on a more introspective side though. As more and more hisses are added/ subtracted/ stretched to their outer limits, the flow of sounds manages to turn your senses around – through a subtle use of “ghost” noises – just before ending on an abrupt, exhilarating note.
As brief as it is intense, this intriguingly-packaged (paint-sprayed small-case) 3” CDR (courtesy of the always amazing Carbon Records) is highly recommended to all those who love to experience music as a continuously disturbed, yet ecstatic flow of sound. A true shot of sonic adrenalin and a hell of a great record to come out of blue/ into the void. 9/10 -- (27 December, 2006) - Francois Hubert

"staplerfahrer started out to be me, some ten years ago, when Icircuitbended the amplifier of my first record player....the resultturned out to be some ecstatic noise and from that moment on I washooked....from then on sound was the law....and I do (or try to do)just about everything with it...."
"'Depths In Perception' is the follow-up of 'scsi vs ata', also on TIBProd (see Vital Weekly 392) by fellow Dutch man Steffan de Turck. The long gap has been used to produce these eight tracks of microscopic sounds, but I'm told that Steffan is also using circuit-bending to generate his sounds. I think this new release is a major step forward. He combines 'real' samples of instruments with sounds that are fully loaded with plugins. With these samples at hand he manages to craft almost melody like stuff in these small sketch like tunes. Breaking away from the really abstract microsound and moving towards a more poppy sound." ---Frans de Waard in Vital Weekly 452

The time to rot has begun. I know that weaklings start to rot rapidly when they are exposed to the air. They seem to rot even more rapidly if they are exposed to warmer air. Human beings might stoop to bless a creature so evil - as indeed Rotkop was blessed, with money, deference, even a Nobel Prize - but God, I am quite sure, will damn them for eternity. The human being (also referred to throughout culinary history as "long pig" and "hairless goat" in the case of younger specimens) is not generally thought of as a staple food source. Can you smell the rot? Tomorrow - belongs to nobody... (Awesome Donovan 2004)
