"In the spring of 2011, Michael "Powderfinger" Morley was in the U.S. for a short visit. There had been some talk of doing a Gate show or two, but when he visited Western Mass., Feeding Tube Records decided to put use to his collaborative talents. He played one night at the Yod space in Florence with Kim Gordon and Bill Nace, then at Feeding Tube with Spencer Yeh and Meg Clixby. Both sets provided jumbo pleasure, and Michael managed to record the Yod set for our presentation to you. Kim and Bill were at the beginning of their duo explorations at this point. Can't even remember if they'd started using the Body/Head name yet. Regardless, the instrumental sluice -- with occasional spirit-vocals by Kim -- is similar yet quite different from the duo tactics they've since evolved. Morley's presence gives the proceedings a bit of a grungy psychedelic smear, whereas their other recordings (at least as of now) have a rather more ethereal arc. The set occurred in front of a slowed-down screening of Catherine Breillat's gorgeous 1976 film Une Vraie Jeune Fille. Feeding Tube thinks you'll agree that the music here matches the sexy surrealist power of that film frame-for-frame, or your money back. The cover, by the way, is a beautiful silkscreen designed by Morley and based on an outtake from Susan Harris' NBC program, The Golden Girls. The image was based on Bea Arthur and Betty White's characters from a season five episode entitled "Break-In." The album title is a phonetic spelling of what Ms. Arthur's character keeps chanting while attending a Madonna concert. Now you know."

- Artist/Title: Century Plants - s/t

- Format: LP
- Label: Tape Drift (USA)
- Price: $12
- Catalog ID: CarbonDist_TapeDrift_CenturyPlants
"Century Plants deliver the goods here with a one-sided live LP (limited to 100 copies) that is a tribute/homage to British hardcore legends Discharge. A heartfelt and very sincere love letter to the punk spirit of 1982 if you will. It’s a fitting concept, given that Century Plants member Ray Hare was part of that original era, as the lead singer for Washington DC’s Deadline. In fact, Hare’s deep roots in the punk scene (he appears on the seminal “Flex Your Head” LP) make his vocal homage to Discharge even more appropriate. Musically, Century Plants have updated the sound of 81/82, with a fully improvised approach, fuzz-drenched feedback, and lyrics that draw on several different Discharge songs. Most importantly, the spirit of blistering political dissent and anti-authoritarianism shines through, with Hare snatching Discharge concepts and phrases at will. It all captures the energy and sonic assault of punk, yet filtered through modern-day noise, drone, and DIY strategies as well. A unique item in their catalog, this is the second vinyl appearance for Albany, NY’s Century Plants, following a split LP with Locrian. Usually a duo (Eric Hardiman and Ray Hare), Century Plants are joined for this record by drummer Phil Donnelly. The three also play together as part of the singularly sprawling improv psych rock unit Burnt Hills. Rather than continuing the ominous dronescapes of the split with Locrian, in this live recording Century Plants offer an intensely rockist track, melding several of their core influences (psych rock, punk, noise, and even dub) into one seething, energetic track. Upstate Violence/Upstate Control? PLAY LOUD!"

- Artist/Title: Crystal Syphon - Family Evil
- 16
- Format: LP
- Label: roaratorio
- Price: $18
- Catalog ID: CarbonDist_ROAR25
"Crystal Syphon, one of the greatest “lost” groups of the West Coast psych scene, came together in Merced, California in 1965. Originally a Beatles / Byrds-influenced unit called the Morlochs, they soon shed their original moniker and moved in a more psychedelic direction, becoming a fixture on the ballroom circuit from 1966-1970. Although their music may nod in the direction of the New Tweedy Brothers and Quicksilver Messenger Service at times, it’s imbued throughout with a distinctive sound that arose from practicing up to six nights a week. The band entertained offers from various labels during their existence, but as they insisted on complete artistic control and ownership of their music, no deals were struck. Now, some 44 years after its creation, Roaratorio is proud to make the music of Crystal Syphon available for the first time ever. Drawn from studio tracks, rehearsal tapes and a live recording from the Fillmore West, Family Evil is released with cover art by Norman Orr and extensive historical liner notes in an old-style “tip-on” jacket. Digital download included."
8/10 : "...unlike many of the scene's almost-rans, Crystal Syphon had great songs on their side, borrowing the best moves from primitivist garage energy, adding the glass-spun guitars and the warp and weft harmonies of The Byrds, and then dosing further with just the right amount of psychedelics. Particularly staggering are several longer cuts, like "Fuzzy And Jose" and the live "Winter Is Cold," where the quintet stretch the songs with sinuous organ and needlepoint guitar solos that are period-piece perfect." - Jon Dale, Uncut
"This is amazing. I'm way past believing that everything of worth has already been mined - I've been surprised too often. However, Merced, California's Crystal Syphon represents a true lost West Coast gem...I'd hate to curse the disc with over-enthusiasm, but you really should own this." - Paul Martin, Shindig!

- Artist/Title: Dan Melchior und das Menace - Catbirds & Cardinals
- 12
- Format: LP
- Label: Northern Spy (USA)
- Price: $16
- Catalog ID: CarbonDist_NS011
"Catbirds and Cardinalsis the latest psychedelic album lobbed in to New World shores from Dan Melchior und das Menace. Coming down slow with a clear vision, it’s a sure hit. Since the late 90s, Shepperton, England native Dan Melchior has consistently delivered an avant-pop that is off-kilter and literate, with a sense of menace and a stronger sense of play. He’s a new Jesus of Cool, riding just about the underground like the antipodean Chris Knox. The sound of Catbirds and Cardinals is clean, lo-fi, deeply-engaging, and guaranteed to pull in new legions of fans. It’s a clever garage pop set that will lick your pate clean.
On Catbirds and Cardinals, Dan Melchior und das Menace successfully meld a hodge podge of disparate elements into a cohesive whole, bringing to mind veteran UK and US underground bands like The Swell Maps, Andrew Klimek, Chrome and Alternative Television more than they do old blues men or the tweedy garage rock conservatives of Dan’s past.
Catbirds and Cardinals is probably the most overtly ‘poppy’ Das Menace release, with songs like ‘Poison Pete’s Holiday’ and ‘English Shame’ lodging in the cranium like carpet warehouse jingles. The recordings retain the overdriven quality Melchior is known for but push the envelope sonically into some unexpected places, with the dream like synths of ‘Crow Radio number 1′ showing a marked departure from the overall guitar grime."

- 16
- Format: LP
- Label: 100% Breakfast! (USA)
- Price: $14
- Catalog ID: CarbonDist_100percent01
"Careening from strange pop highs (as in mouthpiece Angela Sawyer’s piercing vocal shred) to noisy ear shattering lows (as in the madly distorted bass guitar, and bass synth rumble spread throughout the record) Exusamwa’s new full length vinyl only output, titled EXCUSEZ-MOI!, is a forceful and brief exploration of the world of underground sounds ranging from hardcore, to psych-folk, from chip-tune to small group compositions for the likes of violin and sousaphone. In this record we have an ambitious album art concept on our hands. The always pushing themselves Exusamwa (they wear handmade costumes every time they perform, but never the same costumes) not only give you a record full of spastically challenging sounds when you purchase their new release but also a fully playable role playing game replete with a 36 page rule book and full color pieces to cut out and play with. My copy even came with special dice. What more can you expect from the person behind Weirdo Records and a member of the legendary Fat Day. At one point on the record we overhear a snippet of a conversation between bandmates where directions are given to “turn the Marshall all the way up to 10.” And that is just what this gang has done. Sometimes literally as on “The Face: Eyes”‘ 1 minute of noise rock sludgery, but all over the record it’s clear that the band is going all out in every different direction. “I Mow You Down” is post-punk gone hardcore. “Vulcan Formed Them” strange psychedelic folk and broken drum machine. “Thank You Teachers” a hardcore blast, and “The Face: Ears” an 8-bit blipping electronic stew. This record should be famous." - Boston Hassle

Existing in the musty shadows of the Philly scene, Far-Out Fangtooth have built a most unique foundation of sound, mixing early Cramps swamp / garage blackout, nascent Bauhaus post-punk / quasi-goth bleakness as well as an uncanny nod to the witchy, ethereal leather glam of first-generation Blue Öyster Cult. Their debut LP, Pure & Disinterested, follows a limited-edition 7-inch for local label Ian! Records. In recent months, Far-Out Fangtooth has seen live action on bills with the likes of Times New Viking, Circle Pit, Blank Dogs and R. Stevie Moore. - Artist/Title: Gentle Jones - Let's Be Friends

- Label: Little Mafia (USA)
- Price: $12
- Catalog ID: CarbonDist_ LM093
"Gentle Jones sits comfortably atop the Mason-Dixon line in his home state of Delaware, performing frequently as a Hip-Hop MC and DJ, though he's done stints as the front man for a Ska band and a Punk band as well, winning local awards and international acclaim. His newest album "Let's Be Friends" is a playful conglomerate of live musicians and studio wizardry which showcases Jones breathtaking vocal range, moving easily from singing, to screaming, to intricate rhyming cadences.
Honing his craft on stages from California to Ireland, Gentle Jones has delighted concertgoers beside music legends The Wailers, Murs, Condemned 84, Murphy's Law, The Pietasters, Cappadonna, Trombone Shorty, Brother Ali, The Slackers, and Bad Luck 13. This newest album is the first record to capture the many facets of this phenomenal songwriter with working class roots and space age chops."

- Artist/Title: George Cartwright and Davu Seru - Rag
- 12
- Format: LP
- Label: roaratorio
- Price: $19
- Catalog ID: CarbonDist_ROAR19
"Rag captures the best from a series of freely improvised meetings between saxophonist George Cartwright and percussionist Davu Seru, recorded at various Minneapolis venues over the course of 2009. Cartwright – longtime leader of Curlew, and owner of a musical c.v. which includes Ornette Coleman, Half Japanese, Alex Chilton and Loren Mazzacane – can be restlessly melodic or jaggedly guttural on the reeds, although his bedrock lyricism is never far from the surface. Seru’s playing is a trompe l’oreille marriage of forward motion and suspended stasis; over the past decade, he’s performed with Milo Fine, Paul Metzger and Evan Parker, among others. From the anthemic opening of “Titus” to the miniature coda of “I Think Eudora Knows,” Rag is a lively dialogue between two masters of their craft. Released in an edition of 300 copies on colored vinyl, each with a unique cover print by Anne Elias and a digital download coupon."

- Artist/Title: Haunted House - Blue Ghost Blues
- 12
- Format: LP
- Label: Northern Spy (USA)
- Price: $16
- Catalog ID: CarbonDist_NS012
"The blues has grown up a lot in the last ten years, since guitarist Andrew Burnes left New York for Georgia, bringing a de facto end to the powerful abstract blues of Haunted House. In the time since, a new generation — sometimes referred to as Freak Folk or New Weird America and spearheaded by Tom Carter*, Jack Rose and Ben Chasny — has followed in the footsteps of Loren Connors, John Fahey and a handful of others who have long maintained that the blues is something more than 12 bars and a backbeat.
After the demise of Haunted House, Connors continued preaching the gospel, often with his wife — the enigmatic singer Suzanne Langille — to anyone who would listen, playing a slow, distorted, reverb-drenched blues as slowly the world began to come around. Then, in the summer of 2010, the stars aligned just so: Burnes was in town for a few days, percussionist Neel Murgai was available, and the Brooklyn’s Issue Project Room was booking matinee concerts in their courtyard. The band had only existed for a brief two years and had been absent for a decade, but they picked up right where they left off with only a brief soundcheck as rehearsal. Another matter of months, and they were in the studio, recording at long last the follow-up to their 1999 Erstwhile release Up in Flames.
Looking back, maybe it isn’t that the blues has grown up. Maybe it has reverted to its youth. After all, John Lee Hooker, Son House and Mississippi Fred McDowell weren’t beholden to any 12-bar fixity. Nor was Lonnie Johnson, whose song “Haunted House” gave the band its name. They all played it how they felt it. It wasn’t until the 1960s and the British blues revival (its champion, ironically perhaps, being Connors’ beloved Eric Clapton) that the blues was codified into its current formula.
Haunted House is an unusual band. With Indian hand percussion and no bass, they don’t look like a blues band — and maybe they’re not. But they play it how they feel it. What more could you ask for?"

- Artist/Title: High Castle - You're On Your Own Way
- 10
- Format: LP
- Label: Zum (USA)
- Price: $9
- Catalog ID: CarbonDist_ZUM026
[1 SIDED EP]
Hailing from different corners of the noisier spectrum of Southern California bands (Child Pornography, Duchesses, Woman's Worth, Work, Hips, and Saboteurs), we signed them not on the strength of their pedigrees but on the bona fides of a suckerpunch live delivery and one self-released CDR. High Castle is your older brothers' favorite band, assuming he grew up on a steady diet of '90s underground rock. They produce a viscous byproduct of the jams you grew up on dragged through a record collection's worth of sludge and muck. Once you decide to bring it, that's kinda the only way to go. The "You're on Your Own Way" EP is the debut record for High Castle, a culmination of songs road tested on summer 2008 US tour and written post New Years hallucinations. Songs about garbage strikes, astral projection, lonely security guards, hedonism, dropping out, meditation, injustice, misplaced hearts...and more. Seven short bursts of salvation, pressing of 500, mastered by Weasel Walter. Two color silkscreened covers by Paul Morgan (Club Sandwich, Business Lady)
"The new High Castle 12" EP is pretty brutal throughout, metal and HC tinged, but it still finds these weird little spazzy, jazzy grooves in spots. Maybe it's art rock? Whatever you want to call it, it's geting some turntable time, and with a song titled 'Are Fixed Gear Tricksters the New Rollerbladers?' I think you get an idea where they stand. It's on Zum Records, and I think it's the band's debut." -THRASHER

"Brand new split LP featuring heavy hitting UK bleak dudes... A-Side is Jazzfinger's 'Killed In A Clear Sky', one solid slab of fucked up tapped guitar drone and distant errie whir... like a storm of electric feedback, slashes and cuts. Far out, and a real killer 20 odd minutes to make you lull out. B-Side is a collaboration between Culver and Fordell Research Unit, another side long piece, that starts off with some bassed up doom chugs and slogs that sound like fucking something that could lay down by some Southern Lord brutality, but then it punches you in the face with its distorted churning hell. Limited to 280 white label LPs in black sleeves with hideous brutal artwork by French."

"Scraps And Shadows is the second album by the dream pairing of Joe McPhee and Chris Corsano. A followup to Under A Double Moon, which featured McPhee’s alto saxophone, Scraps And Shadows finds him largely on tenor. Recorded live in Milwaukee in 2011, the album consists of seven dedicatory pieces, from the delicate balladry of “For Adrienne P” to the appropriately combustible “For Han Bennink.” Corsano’s stupendously detailed drumming and McPhee’s free-soul love cries weave a master latticework together. Cover art by Judith Lindbloom. Download coupon included."

"This Forest" is the single side vinyl that italian noise honcho Kam Hassah (also headchief of the secondsleep records) done to the dokuro's catalogue. What Kam Hassah do with "this forest" is to move perfectly a dense stratas of sounds in a hypnagocic way, the rotary slow motion of drones, the layers of reverberated voices, will bring you down under the moaning branches of this gloomy forest of sounds.
A spiral implosion will show you the dark side of your soul where no light can shine and then... under again, in the viscous undergrowth where the beasts crawl.
One track of pure bleak catharsis.

- Artist/Title: Mark Feehan - MF
- 12
- Format: LP
- Label: Siltbreeze
- Price: $15
- Catalog ID: CarbonDist_SB147
While our erstwhile maestro is likely to point out personal involvement in Miami’s Broken Talent or Trash Monkeys as the apex of his twisted musical endeavors, the fact remains that Mark Feehan is most likely best remembered as the “other” cold-blooded string-mangler that shredded synapses through the Siltbreeze era of Harry Pussy two decades ago. While recent years have seen former bandmate Bill Orcutt reinvent the essence of gut-bucket blues, Feehan whiled away the time building an exact replica of an infamous Confederate submarine (the H.L. Hunley) and traveling the world, submerged. During that tenure nestled in Neptune’s realm, he created a masterful album of his own—this very collection bearing his humble monogram.
MF is a lively mix of guitar-based compositions steeped in modal harmonics that explode into miasmic, aural waves, transporting emanations of Phil Yost, Magical Power Mako, Michael Chapman and Hans Reichel into the mind stream. Swirling, spacey eddies will open like maelstroms and flood your subconscious, but do not be afraid. That much time under water changes a man. But sometimes it’s for the best. And MF is a case in point. Limited edition of 350 copies.

- Artist/Title: Max Block - Air Ache In The Belly Of The Leech
- 12
- Format: LP
- Label: Siltbreeze
- Price: $15
- Catalog ID: CarbonDist_SB148
For the majority of newbie Flying Nun collectors, The Max Block’s eponymous (and only) 12-inch release is more myth than fact. Few seemed to have been pressed, and even fewer were available in the brief window of time (mid-’80s) when it was “around.” Unknown until very recently was that a second EP had been recorded and slated for release by Flying Nun but never realized. Air Ache in the Belly of the Leech is a compendium of both, and thus the complete recorded works of The Max Block. You’re welcome. Some background: The Max Block is where Maryrose (née Wilkinson) and Brian Crook—now the power couple behind The Renderers—joined forces for the first time. Maryrose was coming out of Above Ground, and Brian out of Scorched Earth Policy. With the enlisted talents of Rebecca Shanahan and Robbie Stowell, The Max Block pushed different boundaries than other active Christchurch bands at the time; they came out slinging a brain-splattering goo of art-spaced, Pere-Ubu-seared cerebellum, and frenetic, Mars-fried medula oblongata. Such tantalizing aromas! Pardon me, garçon, but make mine deux. Bottom line, Siltbreeze is proud to make available this remarkable and awesome collection, much of it seeing the light of day for the first time ever. Edition of 500.

The only logical path for Pay Toilets travels from ocean to swamp to desert to vinyl. - 16
- Format: LP
- Label: roaratorio
- Price: $17
- Catalog ID: CarbonDist_ROAR23
“Song Poems Wanted” read the ads. “We need new ideas for recording!” The send-us-your-lyrics business was a borderline scam, taking whatever lyrics came their way from would-be songwriters and – for a fee – setting them to music. None of the results ever came close to being a hit, and to be sure, the vast majority was sufficiently bland or clumsy to insure no great karmic loss in their instant obscurity and miniscule press runs. But Rodd Keith – the late, great genius whose prolific output was almost completely confined to the song-poem industry – had a knack for turning sow’s ears into silk purses. The nature of the business required him to work quickly, with no second takes, and his skill at writing and arranging on the fly was not unlike that of a master improviser. When at his best, he put his unique musical stamp on some lucky customer’s submission.
My Pipe Yellow Dream is the second Roaratorio anthology of the highlights of Rodd Keith’s work. Compiling fifteen previously unreissued songs from 1966 through his death in 1974 – including a never-before-heard cover of “Choo Choo Train” – My Pipe Yellow Dream showcases the full range of his talents. From exquisite mid-60s pop balladry (“Deep Velvet”) to blue-eyed soul (“You Don’t Have To Alibi”) to folk-rock (“Tired Of Waiting”) to solo Chamberlain creations (“Red Sports Car”) to gospel testifying (“O Jesus My Savior”) to a pair of patriotic screeds (the all-spoken word “America The Not So Beautiful” and the bizarre-world lounge funk of “Search Out Your Soul, American”), this collection continues the rehabilitation of Rodd Keith’s recorded legacy from thrift-shop throwaway to celebrated cult artist.
A limited edition LP in a gorgeous gatefold jacket, with artwork by Josh Journey-Heinz and liner notes from song-poem vocalist Dick Kent.

Outside what Carbon normally carries in the catalog, this is from a couple friends currently living in Rochester NY, who know how to create massively lush, melodic compositions. A very broad reference, would be a more vocally-centered Animal Collective, with multi layered percussion, keyboard/piano, guitars, etc.
Clusterchord is the 5-track debut EP from The Revival Hour, which is D.M. Stith (Asthmatic Kitty) and John Mark Lapham from the Earlies (Secretly Canadian/Names) and The Late Cord (4AD), with a full length LP coming in early 2013.

"The second Trop Tard release, Ils Étaient 9 Dans L’Obscurité, continues in the same sorrowful vein as its predecessor, Photodrome, but with a much clearer sound, having been recorded in a small studio. The piercing shards of the simplistic guitar and wicked bursts of electronics complement the ennui of the vocals on this rare record. Sacred Bones is excited to be making this album available to the world in a limited edition of 700 deluxe LP format.
“Trop tard” is a French term translating to “too late.” It is also the name of one of the darkest and most elusive bands to come out of Europe. For nearly a quarter century the music of Trop Tard has been lost to the world, trapped in the icy expanse of mid-80s provincial France. The trio self released Photodrame k7(1987) and Ils Etaient 9 Dans L’Obscurité LP(1988) in extremely limited editions that likely saw little if any distribution outside of their native France. Yet these are two of the true coveted jewels in the crown of the French Cold Wave. Also known as La Vague Froide, the movement was inspired by inspired by British post-punk and legendary producer Martin Hannett, creator of Manchester’s Factory Records sound. Looking back now, 25 years later, Trop Tard stands as one of the purest embodiments of its Romantic spirit." [includes download code]

"Of all languages, French may be the most musically suited to convey the emotion of melancholy. And as the prickly landscape of Photodrame unfolds, the yearning lyrical baritone plays out as a sardonic disgust and surrender to the sorry state of things. Armed with a stripped-down gear set-up of bass, guitar and a single drum machine, the band recorded this at home direct to tape. Sacred Bones is excited to be making this album available on LP for the first time in a limited edition of 700 deluxe LP format.

Weirdo Records
Nuuj & Joe Tunis (aka half of Pengo) duo of bass & drums. Slow, vibrating stoner metal with growly vocals that sometimes does a 180 & picks up for fast & muscular riff workouts. Bass distortion is great sounding- it's a record that could make you want to buy a motorcycle.
Upstate Soundscape
Rochester sons Nuuj and Joe Tunis are pretty busy guys. They can be spotted on the roster of numerous projects, many of which are backed by Tunis’s Carbon Records. While some of those former projects include Pango, Crush the Junta, and the deteriorated Hilkka, I’m glad they’ve come together as Tuurd, a name both infantile, idosyncratic, and awesome. For such a simple and straightforward sound on their debut EP I Wish My Wife Was This Dirty, Tuurd keeps me focused. Following suit in the vein of stoner metal/sludge metal/prog rock, Tuurd has found a sound that fits in between all these genres.
The first track “Water” starts off with a climbing riff and a constant drum thud, taking us on a journey down a dark and weary moat. As the song progresses, the bass maintains a slow and sturdy progression. About halfway through, a voice that sounds like an orc from Middle Earth growls “I’ll show you some power, to get you some water.” In fact, Sauron would enjoy rocking out to Tuurd in his chamber on Mt. Doom. Combined with the simple melody and captivating concept, this is a strong first track.
Not all the songs are as hypnotic as “Water.” If you are looking for something more upbeat, “Reeses Feeses” fits the bill. As the second track, this song accomplishes hooking the listener by opening with straddling chords (if The Black Keys got dirty, they’d create something similar), and rare pauses, leaving time to think. It’s not for long until Tuurd propels back into the ruckus for a roll in the mud. Throughout the album the lyrics and vocals are scarce, but when they come in its satisfying. Tuurd has a unique falsetto that I haven’t heard before within metal, almost satirical, but just enough.
There’s a meditative quality to stoner metal that I’ve come to appreciate over the years. The grit, sweat, and pacing remind me of great warriors barging their way through knotty forests. It’s not in your face crazy or senseless strumming. Especially a band like Tuurd, which has an interactive quality and each song seems to emphasize rhythm and drive as with “Eating Ice Cream with Satan,” which is focused on the back and forth play between guitar and drums. It pushes and pulls until the lyrics brag about eating ice cream with Satan in hell. Not going to lie, I’m pretty jealous. Similar to “Eating Ice Cream with Satan” is the album’s eponymous track, “I Wish My Wife Was This Dirty”. It opens with curly cueing dizzying guitar, paired with an intense drumbeat that begs for a breather. The drums continue to chant, until the sound stretches and grows.
A lot of this album is focused on exploring a certain riff, repeating it, then building upon that solid noise and contrasting it with excellent drums and humorous vocals. Tuurd’s biggest quality is keeping it together, seen in the gritty distortion of “Sliding Down” and the massive collisions in “Doot do doot.” Overall, I’m impressed with Tuurd’s hilarious concept and physical skill. Honestly, I wish my wife was this dirty, too.
Aquarius Records
First we've heard from this oddly monikered duo, just bass and drums, who traffic in a sort of sludge/doom dirgery, the bass super distorted and blown out, sounding in places more like a guitar than a bass, but unfurling thick slabs of buzzing low end, while the drums deliver a plodding caveman accompaniment. The vocals might be the strangest of all, a sort of sung/spoken demonic growl, which give Tuurd a much more abstract experimental vibe. It really does sound like a Neanderthal version of OM. The groove is dark and stonery, thick and sludgey, but when it slows down, and gets a little mathy and dynamic, stripped down while the vocals gurgle malevolently, it's transformed into something else entirely. Which is also what happens on the second track, at least in the first half, the band ditching the sludge for some dense mathy noise prog, the bass and drums in a wild tussle, which finally gives way to a more slithery downtuned groove.
It's hard to really nail these guys down, the label mentions all sorts of other duos, from Lightning Bolt to the Ruins, as well as other bands that occupy a similar sonic space, Sleep, Abruptum, Killdozer, Slug (someone needs to reissue all the Slug records!), Black Sabbath and a bunch of others. But to our ears, Tuurd sound like slowed down power violence, like Man Is The Bastard covered by Corrupted, or some rare Slap A Ham 7" spinning at 5 or 6 rpm, but that's only one side of the Tuurd, the band totally capable of whipping out some seriously dense downtuned progginess, the combination of the two is what makes this stuff so good. Murky and muddy, dirgey and doomy, crusty and filthy, heavy as fuck obviously, proggy and mathy and not without a sense of humor (check out "Eating Ice Cream With Satan"). Definitely recommended for fans of any and all of the above mentioned bands, and anyone who like their music sloooooow and loooooow.
Super striking cover art, the album titled drawn in dirt on the front, the band name smeared in mud (please let it be mud!) on the back. Pressed on brown vinyl (of course) and includes a digital download. - Andee

A mighty comprehensive snap-shot of the underground sounds emanating from the city of Rochester New York circa now (2012). From the post-noise extreme sounds of LICKER & r. nuuja (both members of Pengo) to the more pastoral psych smudged compositions of Joe Sorriero (of Nod) & Drippers, this collection of Western NY weirdos addresses the question “What the hell is going on in Rochester to create such odd sounds?”. This LP is the 200th release on long time Rochester based record label Carbon Records. We think in due time that this LP will sit easily next to other regional compilation records like Waste Sausage (Black Eye Records - Australia) & Labyrinths And Jokes (Hanson Records - Michigan) as a definitive & defining document of the Flower/Flour City's post-everything scene.
The LP consists of r.nuuja (Pengo), Colonel Parmesan (Thunderbody), Dr Hamburger (Tumul, Jungle Heart), Crush the Entente (Crush the Junta and Entente Cordiale collaboration), Stone Baby, Martin Freeman, Tumul, Autumn in Halifax, Chris Reeg (Blood and Bone Orchestra, Ian Downey is Famous), Joe Sorriero (Nod), Licker (Pengo), Drippers, Andy Gilmore, Pengo, MntDst, and the Bloody Noes. White vinyl with digital download coupon. Mastered by James Plotkin.

Beats Per Minute
Rochester seems a weird place, if Carbon Records is any indication. This local noise label, started in 1994, has long specialized in bringing the best leftfield tunes that the upstate NY town has to offer, and with CR200 they’ve released a massive compilation of bands their mining has dredged up over the years. Kicking off with some Phil-Elverum-goes-black-metal instrumentation (courtesy of Chris Reeg) and spanning more traditional noise in addition ambling acoustic guitar experimentation, fractured yelps of pop songs, and doomy drones, this compilation represents a wealth of diversity in the label’s stable. Whether it’s the kraut-noise stomp of “Free To Starve”, Crush The Entente’s contribution, or Autumn In Halifax’s austere, bluesy spiritual “David O David”, there’s incredible tracks throughout. If this is the work of a great curator, then, well, good on Joe Tunis for bringing these tracks together and celebrating the best the region had to offer. But if the general darkness of these tracks is inherent to the Rochester experience, we might be worried about the emotional state of that city’s inhabitants. Above I list several noise and psych bands in the “For fans of”, but this time you shouldn’t necessarily take those as guidelines so much as benchmarks: by and large the tunes on CR200 take a similar sort of intellectual preparation. These are tracks that, while endlessly intriguing, present a pervading heaviness that even in the most accessible moments can be a bit off-putting. That all being said, if you’re willing to give it the time it demands, it’s a compelling cross section of a widely under-examined scene. It’s like wandering into your city’s weirdest art gallery – in the dingiest warehouse space – and allowing yourself to be bombarded with what the underground has to offer.

Consider this a voyeuristic glimpse into what your neighbors have been up to. Small cities and towns across America all tend to have their own experimental music scenes and record labels. But it's rare to find them as uniformly dedicated and pedigreed as Carbon Records. CR200 marks the label's 200th release. It's on vinyl and cassette. And it includes exclusive recordings from several Carbon artists, new and old, all local. There's a wide range of material and recording quality among this set of (mostly) instrumentals. Some of this is rather poised, like Andy Gilmore's chiming guitar pointillism on "Clipper Ship," or the oddly tender power electronics of Dr Hamburger's "Twin Speak." And some of this is expectedly shambolic, though never predictable. Despite the variety in approach, it all hangs together rather nicely as an often breathless sonic document; the sound of your city's shadows. It even flows -- a debt owed solely to the label's curative skills and James Plotkin's expert mastering. You're very lucky to live in a city with a Carbon Records, even if you don't know that. Buy this LP or the LP/cassette boxset at Needledrop. Consider it a contribution to the untamed local arts. And then realize how lucky you are, indeed. - Chad Oliveiri
Weirdo Records
In every ignored town across the US, the reason there's a scene... the reason there's anything at all for you to check out while you sit bored in front of your computer... is usually that one lone sonofabitch has been grinding it out there, breaking his back day in & thankless day out to champion some local bands that no one gives a fat shit over. That single guy, he's out there telling everybody within earshot about the bands that he likes & dragging people to shows & giving his friends money for their bullshit basement recordings, and doing it over & over & over again. That guy actually causes subtle changes in the way bands sound in the area over time. In Rochester that guy is Joe Tunis & he's been whipping up bass-heavy doom, electronic freedom & some other cool shit out of nuthin & with zero dollars since 1994. A tip of the hat on his 200th release, which sounds like Rochester and no place else.

"We are incredibly excited to present the debut full length LP from Velvet Elvis, In Deep Time. Recorded at GFI Studios in the early months of 2012, where Velvet Elvis drank deep from the well of rock to bring about six dark tracks of paranoia and depravity that capture hallucinogenic vignettes into a future gone wrong. The songs thunder and crash, sweep and swoon with a greater depth of clarity and vision than we have seen from this band in the past. An expanded sense of texture and dynamics move their signature plodding riffs along to crescendos that could open a hole in the sky. In Deep Time is pure unapologetic rock and roll. The album was produced by Velvet Elvis and Sam Polizzi and mastered for vinyl by Joe Lambert. Hand numbered, limited edition of 300 copies that include a lyric sheet, a section of the analog tape included in the recording process, and digital download card containing the whole album with exclusive bonus track Brass Tacks."

"The band released this EP as a handmade CD-R that has been sold at shows over the past year, but the songs on Peas Feast are so cool that we wanted to give this a proper vinyl documentation, and have been remastered for vinyl by Scott Hull at Visceral Sound. The record will be pressed on yellow wax with black splatter in an edition of 1,000 copies, and will also come with a digital dropcard that will allow you to download the tracks from the Peas Feast EP as well as a digital-only EP titled Drongolet Demos that has a bunch of unreleased tracks from Wildildlife. The Peas Feast vinyl features four lengthy songs, starting with the zonked ultraheavy sludge and atonal, barbed wire guitar freakouts of "White Eyelidz" which goes from crushing glacial metal to drunken bassloaded punk rock in the bat of an eye, and then moves on to the pop genius of "Violent". "Violent" is the catchiest song these guys have, starting off slow with plaintive FX-soaked vocals swimming over pulverizing sludge metal riffage - think Harvey Milk but waaaaaay more freaked out and poppy and mutated by unnameable effects boxes....the hook here is so catchy it gives me a toothache, it's like hearing the saddest old alt rock song ever being played by Corrupted, complete with vocal harmonies. But then comes "Shining Son", another amazingly catchy pop song, still heavy but way more upbeat and driving, more noise rock than sludge, with a big burly bass riffs and ecstatic guitars that strafe the sky until the sludge rears it's head again, a massive swampy riff that rises up and flattens everything towards the end. MASSIVE. And then the final song, "My Song", formerly an acoustic song that appeared on Wildildlife's self titled debut 10", another amazing pop gem, but this time damaged and drunken sounding, the pop hook molten and oozing, the vocals a desperate howl, slow and sludgy and creeping but still unbelievably catchy and exuberant as it trails off into an almost Mammatus-like psych rock coda. Although this early material is more immediate and raw than the band's debut album Six, the music is crushing, catchy and totally spaced-out. On Yellow vinyl with black splatter in a run of 1,000 copies."
