Nod, a longtime fixture on the Rochester, NY music scene is comprised of guitarist Joe Sorriero, bassist Tim Poland and drummer Brian Shafer. Sorriero and Poland also play keyboards. This CD is more like an EP clocking in at just over 23 minutes. There are 7 compositions that range from noodley improvisation to some psych-rock grooves. The fact that these 3 have been playing together for decades really shows in both the tightness of their playing as well as the freeness and intentionality of their improvisations. Shafer in an interview has stated “I think there’s a jazz ethic to it, even though we really can’t play real jazz. We’re not schooled in that.” This makes me like them all the more!
